Evacuated Solar Tube Oven
#1
Hello good people

Last Christmas I was give an Evacuated Solar Tube Oven, like this one. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Large-Rand-So...1078061581

Now that spring is finally here I have been trying it out. Last weekend I baked some biscuits in about 25 minutes. Today I managed to get boiling water, although it took over 4 hours to happen. I kludged together a reflector out of some mylar and a large cardboard tube, not long enough or reflective enough. I think this could be vastly improved with a true parabolic trough. Getting the reflector at the right position seems to make a big difference too. Is it weird that I get excited about boiling water?

Looks like fun. Solar is fun to play with almost like magic. Going with a good reflector will make a big difference. Haven't tried the tube yet but should be good for biscuits or cinnamon rolls, <img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banana.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> taters and all kinds of good stuff.

Very cool, and not weird at all. Those work during the winter as well. I'm probably going to try making my own water heater out of copper pipe/al flashing - all painted black in a glass/greenhouse plastic covered box; this will be next. Check this out:

Next step is to run water past the copper stubs to collect heat and into large (think 200 - 500 gallon) tank insulated to R30. Free hot water all day for days at a time. Step 3 is radiant heat floor using free heat. Big ole' middle finger to the power companies.

its amazing the difference a good cuppa tea or joe can make when shtf and your tired, wet, cold, hungry and with low morale...that boiling water could be a life saver one day!
