Hey, isnt that the famous sourdough starter that the prospectors use to keep (trying to keep it warm) under their clothing....apparently some guarded it with their life!

Yes, I have read the story about prospectors doing the same thing, too. I have found references on sourdough going as far back as the ancient Egyptians.

I have also read that it is possible to either freeze it or dry it and still be able to reconstitute it. I have some that I dried from my original wheat sourdough starter that I am going to experiment with at a later time.

I used my wheat sourdough starter to make the rye sourdough starter. My observation is that the rye is much more active than the wheat. I had a jar of rye half full with the lid on very loosey blow it off after a couple of hours.
