Blade Show West - ddennis2 - 09-29-2018

In case many of you do not know it, Blade Show West will be held in Portland, Oregon Oct 5-7, 2018.

At the show will be several Hoodlums, including yours truly, Brumbie, Stormcrow and Swede225, also know as Luke Swenson.  Luke and Blade Show West are mentioned
in the November issue of Blade magazine.  This is not the first time that Luke has appeared in that magazine and I daresay it will not be the last.  In addition to offering several examples of  his top notch knife skills, Luke will be involved in a roundtable discussion, "The Road to World Class Slip Joints" with Bill Ruple and Rusty Preston.

If you plan to attend, I highly suggest you sit in on this discussion from these award winning and extremely talented bladesmiths.  I know I plan to.

RE: Blade Show West - ddennis2 - 10-08-2018

Back Home from Blade Show West.  Nice show, considerably smaller than the Blade Show in Atlanta.  Still, many talented exhibitors were present with a variety of wares.  The crowds every day were pretty good, but I did not see much buying action taking place.  I think sticker shock may have been the case, as many were just not aware of the cost of a good custom knife.

As always, Portland live up to its motto, "Keep Portland Weird", the crowd was...err....ummm…..eclectic.

Our own Luke Swenson and Stormcrow were there with beautiful examples of their handiwork available for purchase. Brumbie also had a table and was selling some fine examples of knives from his collection,  As I noted before, he seemed to have more luck with selling the lower priced articles than the more expensive items.

Disgraced Dave Canterbury, Nicole Apelian, L.T.Wright , T.O.P.S. Knives and a host of Forged in Fire competitors were also in attendance.  There were also a number of talks and seminars about the various aspects of knifemaking that were worth every minute.

A good trip overall.  You should plan to make it next year.

RE: Blade Show West - Limey Pete - 10-09-2018

I read that Hannibal Lector used an Opinal number 8.
They are $13.95 in carbon steel, a little cheaper in stainless steel.
If a knife is good enough for Hannibal, it is good enough for me. Tongue
I have an Opinel in carbon steel.
A French knife, Opinel knives always stays sharp, and great for cutting up garlic.
The Spyderco Harpy Hannibal used is a vicious looking knife, and I can see no use for this knife apart from disemboweling pickpockets in the street.
The TV Hannibal used a full set of Chroma Type 301 by Porsche, for kitchen knives, however, anyone agree with me that keeping kitchen knives in a wood block is unhygienic?

Opinals are good but need care IMO.

I think of Spyderco Harpies as good for cutting synthetic rope being serrated.

I suspect that the Chromas are made in China? - I have used them they are surprisingly comfortable and handle heavy.

I'm not a fan of Hannibal, Dexter is more my type, I prefer his sense of humor.

Wood blocks and cutting boards can have antibiotic properties depending on species.

Wow thanks for the link on Opinel cooking kit, a serrated knife for cutting bread, a corkscrew and knife, and a vegetable peeler.
My only complaint would be why did they not put a bottle cap popper on the back of the serrated knife blade.
However, as I already carry a serrated knife for cutting bread, out here, and am always stabbing my hand rummaging in my bag to find the damned thing, plus this knife is always stabbing through the side of may day pack! I shall look for the aforesaid Opinel nomad during my forthcoming visit to the UK.
Thank you Deerstalker.
About the TV Hanibal Lector.
In 2003, Hannibal Lecter (as portrayed by Hopkins) was chosen by the American Film Institute as the greatest villain in American cinema.[1] In June 2010, Entertainment Weekly named him one of the 100 Greatest Characters of the Last 20 Years.[
need I write more.
By the way Mr Hopkins is now an American citizen.

All true, Hopkins pretty much always does a great job in his movies.

The actor in the TV series may also, I haven't seen him yet.

Dexter just hit the spot for us as a family Cool

RE: Blade Show West - Stormcrow - 10-17-2018

It was a smaller show than Blade Show, of course, but the second largest show I've been at. I know of several makers who are planning or thinking about going next year. We definitely will. Big Grin

Good to see everyone there.
