<img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whistling:' />/> Stayed up late last night, making Joe's favorite vanilla cake with mocha buttercream icing, for his birthday tomorrow. went out to the corner store looking for buttermilk for the recipe, but the insolent fools didn't have any <img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />/> ....never fear!! I googled it -you could make buttermilk & butter by shaking heavy cream in a jar until the butter and the butter milk separated and it worked.





I don't know why but I just thought it was pretty cool. I have milked a cow before but I never knew you could make butter this way. My round cake pans disappeared mysteriously, so I had to use square ones and cut the cake round.......

When I was a kid we used to make butter with fresh milk. First strain the still warm milk through a dish towel or a clean cloth diaper into quart jars. Then set them in the icebox till the cream rises to the top. Pour the cream off into another jar. Wrap the jar in a towel and put in a old grain sack. Tie the sack to my saddle and trot old Peanuts the five miles to grandma's house. When you took the jar of cream out of the sack, you had a jar of butter. Grandma always had fresh homemade bread, so only about half of the butter made it home.

Awesome! Next time you want to make butter...get a bottle water comes in that has the "riffles" down the side of the bottle...it works much faster because the riffles agitate for you as you shake. I think the last time we made some, we had butter in 2 minutes or less...it was insanely fast. Tell Joe Happy Birthday from us please!

Hello good people

I have spoken about my upbringing on a small farm to this forum before. I shook way too many quart jars making butter when I was a kid, it was a miserably boring chore. Mom would have a bunch of half full quart jars of cream waiting for us kids to come home from school. A few years after I left home, mom discovered she could make butter using a blender. It is noisy so she would let er rip out on the porch. My parents always had more butter than they could use, so mom would always give me butter when I came home for a visit.

Looks like many of the same people commented on it and some people tried it out!!!



I thought very neat! The recipe I found online, said you should rinse it in cold water or else it'd go rancid faster than store-bought, cuz of the buttermilk on it.

For sure, I'll use a riffled water bottle next time. This time, I did use a smooth glass one and it took like 15 minutes of shaking, 1 minute is way better.

When I was on the farm as a kid, my grandmother used to give me a jar with a handle on top attached to a paddle inside the cream in the jar.

“Turn that paddle yer young varmint she used to shout at me, between chewing baccy, or I’ll take a switch to yer.”

I used to sit there on a stool in my dungarees with a straw in my mouth and turn the paddle vigorously.

I remember there was always a little whey left after the butter was made.

As a treat I was allowed to pour the whey onto my bowl of cattle cake and crawl back into my hovel under the stairs.

I would sit in rapture, eating my whey moistened cattle cake.

I ran away from home three times but they just sent the dogs to round me up and bring me back.

The kids of today don’t know how good they have it.

I was always glad to be raised on a farm. We could go out to the milk tank and skim a gallon of cream off the top. We didn't have to do the work, mom wanted it done right.



Good job getting things done. Making do with what you have.
This reminded me of something I read recently about how, around the world, Swiss-style cheeses are becoming more dense and "unholey."



People were supposing it was because of GMOs in the feed or hormones given to the animals, but some enterprising sciencey folks figured out it was actually because of improved hygiene. It turns out the historical holes were actually caused by bacteria eating tiny bits of straw that got included during milking...
